چکیده

Structural transformations between disordered phases, such as liquid-liquid and amorphousamorphous transformations (polyamorphic transformations), have been a focus of interest for the past years. In water, amorphous-amorphous transformation was experimentally observed and transformation between two distinct liquid forms has also been examined [1]. Since a typical atomic configuration of silicon (Si) is the same as that of water (i.e., tetrahedral structure), similar polyamorphic transformations are expected in liquid and amorphous silicon. In this study, isothermal-isobaric first-principles molecular-dynamics simulations [2] were performed to investigate polyamorphism in amorphous and liquid silicon.

High-pressure x-ray scattering and computer simulation studies of density-induced polyamorphism in silicon

A lowto high-density pressure-driven phase transition in amorphous silicon is investigated by synchrotron x-ray diffraction in the diamond anvil cell. Complementary atomistic molecular dynamics computer simulations provide insight into the underlying structural transformations and allow us to interpret the structure factors obtained from experiment. During compression the form of the scattering...

Structural studies and polymorphism in amorphous solids and liquids at high pressure.

When amorphous materials are compressed their structures are expected to change in response to densification. In some cases, the changes in amorphous structure can be discontinuous and they can even have the character of first-order phase transitions. This is a phenomenon referred to as polyamorphism. Most evidence for polyamorphic transitions between low and high density liquids or analogous t...

Simulations of nanocrystals under pressure: combining electronic enthalpy and linear-scaling density-functional theory.

We present an implementation in a linear-scaling density-functional theory code of an electronic enthalpy method, which has been found to be natural and efficient for the ab initio calculation of finite systems under hydrostatic pressure. Based on a definition of the system volume as that enclosed within an electronic density isosurface [M. Cococcioni, F. Mauri, G. Ceder, and N. Marzari, Phys. ...

Atomic layering at the liquid silicon surface: A first-principles simulation

We simulate the liquid silicon surface with first-principles molecular dynamics in a slab geometry. We find that the atom-density profile presents a pronounced layering, similar to those observed in low-temperature liquid metals like Ga and Hg. The depth-dependent pair correlation function shows that the effect originates from directional bonding of Si atoms at the surface, and propagates into ...

Atomistic models of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride from first principles

We present a theoretical study of hydrogenated amorphous silicon nitride a-SiNx :H , with equal concentrations of Si and N atoms x=1 , for two considerably different densities 2.0 and 3.0 g /cm3 . Densities and hydrogen concentration were chosen according to experimental data. Using first-principles molecular-dynamics within density-functional theory the models were generated by cooling from th...
